Presenting Disaster Research in Government Reports
January 15, 2025, 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
As disaster researchers, we often have valuable insights to share, but the most common research outputs – scientific papers – can be inaccessible to policymakers. Government reports are another common tool for reporting research findings both in the aftermath and ahead of disasters. This event will share insights on the specific formats and language that this type of research dissemination can take. We will cover types of reports, how to read and understand them, how to write them, and how to present your research in a report for a policymaking audience.
Jocelyn Stacey, Associate Professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, will kick off the event with a presentation on features of government reports and how researchers can effectively present their research within this paradigm. Following this, Sara Shneiderman, Associate Professor in Anthropology and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, and Kees Lokman, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, will reflect on their experience developing research reports for government agencies, including their recent work supported by BC’s Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.
