DRRN graduate student members Charlotte Milne and Juri Kim were presented with Young Scientist Awards at the 15th International Conference of the Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM) Society 2025. The Young Scientist Award recognizes innovative and impactful research contributions from early-career scholars in disaster risk management.

Presentation: Employing Participatory Concept and Timeline Mapping to Explore Drivers of Change in British Columbia’s Flood Management System
Charlotte’s presentation highlighted insights from the Living With Water project, capturing how experts from multiple sectors understand B.C.’s flood management system. By using participatory timeline and concept mapping in both in-person and online workshops, her team identified key drivers of change that could strengthen the system’s adaptive capacity in the face of future flood risks.

Presentation: Business Evaluations of Neighbourhood Advantage/Disadvantage and Recovery Outcomes after COVID-19 in Vancouver and Calgary
Juri’s work examined how business owners in Vancouver and Calgary evaluated their neighbourhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring how these perceptions influenced recovery trajectories. The research connected neighbourhood advantage and disadvantage to both sales performance and self-reported recovery outcomes.
